Shalyatantra is one among the distinct branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda and is explained as Shreshta or Pradhana anga of Ayurveda. Acharya Sushruta who is better known as the Father of Surgery has given much importance to the subject Shalya tantra in his treatise Sushruta Samhita. Shalya tantra puts emphasis on fundamentals of Surgery, practical training for budding surgeons, detailed description of surgical diseases and it's management with no complications and recurrence.

Sushruta Samhita is a treatise on Shalya tantra which explains Fundamentals of Surgery, Embryology, Anatomy of Human body, Preservation of dead body and dissection techniques, Surgical Diseases and their management. Wounds, ulcers, fractures, congenital and acquired deformities, Basics of plastic reconstructive surgery and Para surgical procedures – Agnikarma ( thermal cauterisation), Kshara karma/kshara sutra (Chemical cauterisation), Raktamokshana – jaloukavacharana ( Leech therapy), Siravyadha (Venesection).

The department is full fledged and is providing good results in chronic non healing ulcers, Ano rectal diseases and practicing many general surgeries as well and effectively practicing all para surgical procedures.
